The rise of the IoT offers countless new opportunities by interconnecting all sorts of embedded devices and sensors. However, before rushing into mass deployment of such embedded sensors into smart cities and smart homes, additional factors such as sustainability need to be taken into account.
Before mass deployment, future IoT system designers will have to ask themselves: Do all new miniaturized sensors really need batteries? Do all these IoT sensors need to be permanently connected in order to be smart or interactive? How to save energy for only rarely used smart sensors or actuators? Also highly important: How to properly secure connectedIoT devices?
This talk provides a few answers to that and presents new approaches for certain sustainable IoT devices and IoT security solutions, based on exemplary proof-of-concept demonstrators of funded research projects where Infineon recently has been involved.
